Slabs, Slabs, and More SlabsA simple serving board, with a twist.
Slabs are one of my favorite pieces to make because of their elegance...I mean, it's just a hunk of wood that gets a little TLC and elbow grease, Right? Sort of. My choice to make one of these is based on the character of the wood - if it is figured, curly, or boasts a standout feature, I let its nature shine on its own. BUT, there's more! I like to think BOTH sides of a slab can contribute to the experience, so I integrate battery-powered LED lighting on the underside for some added atmosphere. |
Serving Boards with Resin PoursTedious, but worth it.
I was hooked the first time I saw a river pour table - the combination of wood and chromatic resin took things to a different dimension for me. But, while a wood/resin combination can be beautiful, it takes a lot of effort to refine the technique. Time, patience, and attention to small details are always upfront in the spotlight when I create something. I also trend a little unconventional with my poured pieces - I seek to find a way the resin pour complements the lumber's grain. This means I often have to get clever with my jigsaw and handheld router. |
Look Ma, No Handles!Maximize the surface area.
I have made a conscious choice to not attach handles to the tops of my serving boards...it's merely a personal preference. First, handles can take away from the board's surface area which should be maximized for laying stuff on. Second, handles can distract from the visual aesthetics of the board. But, if you commission me to make a piece, I will HAPPILY add them if you want them. |
